With our apologies to 18 year olds everywhere (We were all 18 at least once!) Congress is currently considering legislation that would allow 18 year olds to drive full size "Big Rig" truck and trailers on Federal Highways. These are the same 18 year olds that scare heck out of mom and dad when they're out driving the family car because they like speed and can at times be less than responsible. The same 18 year olds that car rental companies won't rent to until they are 25 in most cases.
In response to the dwindling supply of big truck drivers there has been a list of companies that want the freedom to hire kids between 18 & 21 to drive long distances. Every one of us in this office have teenagers and we will confirm that they like to sleep, talk on the phone, text and test the edges of safety. Any one of these activities are a bad mix with big trucks and any 2 of the 3 can prove deadly to the driver or others on the road. The supply of drivers is dwindling because of long hours, poor pay and large periods of time away from home. For some people working conditions like this are a good mix and for most this is unworkable and hence the supply issue.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says there is unequivocal scientific evidence of markedly elevated crash risk for big rig drivers between 18 & 21 driving large trucks and they are opposed to this plan in its entirety. Congress is also considering eliminating one of the mandatory night time sleep periods and allow states to increase the trailer size and weight. It may be hard to believe but the trucking industry also claims that heavier and longer trucks with younger drivers who have slept less make us safer on the highway. You can't make this stuff up!
