Most any new car built in the last 15 years has the option of a "Smart Key" which uses a Key Fob with a computer code within in that communicates with the cars on board computer system. This is a very convenient luxury item and where the law of unintended consequences comes into play.
There are inherent risks when you use a key fob and they are magnified with failing to read the owner's manual. Studies suggest that less than 10% of people read their owner's manual and those that do are aware that the valet key is contained in the manual itself. Not knowing this makes your car susceptible to easy theft. Reading the owner's manual also makes it clear that there are limitations to the safe operation of a car with a keyless ignition. Many of the limitations of the Smart Key system and spelled out in your owner's manual and this would be a great time to read the manual.
There are at least 2 serious issues that every owner with this sort of ignition should be aware of and many don't. The first piece of information they need to know is how to shut the car off if the throttle sticks or there is some other issue that requires intervention. The owner's manual explains how to perform this vital task and unless you learn how you are at risk.
The next area that is becoming an issue is leaving the car running in the garage when you get home. Many of the newer hybrids are so quiet that you may not even be aware that the car is still running when you get out. When a car is left running in a closed garage it may cause the garage to fill with Carbon Monoxide. While this may seem unlikely there have been 13 documented deaths to date from this exact occurrence. The manufacturers are aware they need to place visible warnings inside the driver compartment and few are taking action. Ford has started this process and while the others know about it they have not started to address the issue as of yet.
