There are things we see each day that we don't really pay attention to. The reality is that they seem minimal at the time and in most cases they end well. Others however don't end so well.
A report released recently suggests that the typical driver in California spends equal amounts of time driving and looking at their phone! That actually means that less than 50% of their attention is spent on the very proactive process of driving! This has a catch all term called "Distracted Driving". Where do you fall in this mix?
What some drivers are doing while they are driving is kind of terrifying! Things like;
- Talking on their cell phone.
- Reading or writing.
- Sending a text message.
- Talking to passengers in the car.
- Adjusting the radio or other controls.
- Eating and/or drinking.
- Brushing their hair or putting on makeup.
- Brushing their teeth or other sorts of grooming.
- Watching a video.
- Any activity that takes your eyes off the road.
While you may believe that some of these activities seem harmless and may well be harmless, the actual statistics reveal otherwise. In 2014 over 3,000 people died and over 400,000 people were injured in accidents involving distracted drivers. There are estimates that over 750,000 drivers are using cell phones and other electronic devices at any given moment. With 750,000 people driving distracted it shouldn't come as a surprise that so many people will die or be injured in distracted driving crashes.
