Technology advances used to be limited to computers and cell phones and these days everything seems to be impacted, including e-cigs or "vaping" with serious consequences. The reality is battery technology has finally caught up to e-cigs.
Scott Becker was recently sitting at a conference table in the middle of a meeting when the lithium-ion battery that powers his e-cig exploded in his pocket. He reports "It was like having a firework go off in your pocket" and went on to say "I threw my chair back and I started hitting my pants and my hip. I saw the sparks shooting out of my jeans". The result was third degree burns that a year later still require active treatment three times a day.
Injuries like this are becoming more common. These new generation batteries can explode with enough force to knock out teeth and crack vertebrae if they fail in the mouth of the user. There are also reports that the burns received by the victims are much deeper and more serious than other types of burns. Although there have not been any reported deaths there has been over 300 burn cases with enough severity to require hospitalization. Due to the chemicals in the batteries, people are experiencing chemical burns in addition to thermal burns. It should also be noted that the FAA recently banned e-cigs from checked luggage because of the fire risk.
