Prescription Drug DUI... A Growing Threat On The Highway

Tiger Woods was adamant he wasn't driving under the influence of alcohol, few believed him and it turns out he was telling the truth. His blood test came back with a 0.0% Blood Alcohol Level and many wondered how it was possible. The answer is prescription drugs and the problem is getting worse... much worse.

Tiger Woods made a statement to the press later on the same day as his arrest saying "I take full responsibility for my actions. I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications." There is certainly no evidence we are aware of to contradict the statement by woods and it demonstrates the severity of the risk to drivers. Crashes involving drugged drivers have almost doubled over the last decade and in 2015 over 21% of the 32,000 fatal crashes involved at least one driver who tested positive for drugs. The 21% figure is a sharp rise since 2005 when that number was below 12%.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports "While it's illegal across the United States to drive while drunk, the laws involving drugged driving vary across the states." Studies show that Marijuana users are more likely to be involved in accidents likely due to legalization of marijuana in many states. Statistics reveal that marijuana users are much more likely to be young males and this group is already at increased risk of automobile crashes. Even though fatal traffic accidents have gradually declined over the last decade as a result of stricter laws related to drunk driving and public safety campaigns, fatal accidents have started to creep back up as a result of distracted driving.

The rise in fatal highway crashes involving drugged drivers is indicative of a more pervasive problem. In 2015 Drug overdose deaths rates were more than 2.5 times the rate in 1999 according to the CDC (Centers For Disease Control). Much of this increase can be traced back to the explosion of opiod addiction and the subsequent decrease in the price of heroin and accessibility to other highly addictive prescription drugs. Drug overdoses are at a peak of 16.3 per 100,000 in 2015 and this is a rise from 6.1 per 100,000 people in 1999. The CDC concluded that the biggest spike in fatal drug overdoses took place among Generation X and baby boomers.
