Many of us are aware that 36 people died in Oakland in a warehouse fire. The fire happened in a building nicknamed the "Ghost Ship". Our sympathy and prayers are extended to both the victims and families of those that perished in the fire.
In a perfect world the balcony collapse in Berkeley would have been followed up by new laws, higher standards and people being held accountable for failing those 13 students and their friends. It's apparent we don't live in a perfect world.
The California Contractors State License Board recommended suspension or revocation of Segue Constructions license alleging they willfully disregarded plans and ignored standards when building the apartment complex near U. C. Berkeley. The result of their negligence lead to the death of 6 students and severe injury to at least 7 more students.
The weather this year has been a departure from previous years in that we have weather to talk about that actually impacts how we drive. We've been blessed in recent years in that our Winter driving has been much like Summer driving without all the heat. Not so this year. The fact that Folsom Lake is filling up shows that we have had lots and lots of rain and it means that weather impacts how we drive.
Downtown Berkeley was the backdrop for yet another deadly balcony collapse. This balcony collapse took the lives of 6 students and severely injured 7 others. The investigation is currently focused on rotted wood as the cause. Five of the dead were Irish Nationals and the sixth was a dual Irish-U.S. citizen who lived in Rohnert Park.
The news has been filled with stories about construction defects that have lead to lives being lost and even lives that hang in the balance as a result of defects that should have been uncovered during the initial planning and building phase. In fact, several of these have been close to home and we want to share some insider information about these issues.
