Recently a child in Southern California was injured by a piece of debris after a drone collided with a tree. That piece of debris hit the child as she was in a stroller. In another incident a small child in the United Kingdom was rendered partially blind by a drone that was being flown by a family friend and the friend lost control.
Kids and adults are attacked by dogs more often than most people are willing to believe. The consequences of those attacks are immediate and can be severe and even lead to death. Statistics from the Center for Disease Control suggest over 4 million people are attacked by dogs each year.
If you decide to walk someplace for your health you may want to reconsider once you listen to recent studies and look at the actions of the City of Sacramento. Sacramento recently embarked on what they have termed "Vision Zero Sacramento". Vision Zero is a traffic safety initiative whose aim is a roadway with no fatalities or serious injuries. Vision Zero rejects the notion that traffic crashes are simply "accidents," but instead preventable incidents that can and must be systematically addressed.
A recent report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals fatal traffic accidents increased at the alarming rate of over 8% in the first 9 months of last year. Another aspect of this report is the reality that most of these aren't accidents and instead should be defined as automobile crashes due to the reality of an accident being outside of someone's control.
Recently IKEA reached a tentative settlement for $50 Million Dollars with 6 American families whose children were killed when the Swedish company's furniture fell on them. The families sued after the children were crushed to death after a dresser or chest fell on them.
Lawyers for the families argued the furniture was designed in such a way that it was inherently unstable and easily tipped over. Lawyers for the families are referring the case and results to the Consumer Products Safety Commission.
The reason the Consumer Products Safety Council is being included in the investigation is these deaths would have likely never happened if IKEA had made the dressers in accordance with the Voluntary National Safety Standards. While the standards are voluntary, safety is not! The standards are in place to prevent accidents of this sort. The head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning to owners of the recalled furniture "If you have or think you have one of these products, act immediately," Chairman Kaye said "It is simply too dangerous to have the recalled furniture in your home unanchored, especially if you have young children."
IKEA has taken the next step and recalled over 29 million of the chests and dressers in question in response to both the accidents and the settlement. A child dies once every two weeks on average in accidents involving toppled furniture or television sets, according to the safety commission. A report issued in 2014 by the commission said children were the victims in 84 percent of the 430 deaths reported between 2000 and 2013 from tipped-over televisions, furniture and appliances; about 65 percent of those children were between 1 and 3½ years old. The IKEA settlement represents progress for consumer advocates working since 1989 to hold the company accountable for the deaths of young children.

Many of us are aware that 36 people died in Oakland in a warehouse fire. The fire happened in a building nicknamed the "Ghost Ship". Our sympathy and prayers are extended to both the victims and families of those that perished in the fire.
The California Contractors State License Board recommended suspension or revocation of Segue Constructions license alleging they willfully disregarded plans and ignored standards when building the apartment complex near U. C. Berkeley. The result of their negligence lead to the death of 6 students and severe injury to at least 7 more students.
The Sacramento Bee recently reported serious dog bites have risen 44% state wide and the Sacramento Valley has seen a rise of over 50% since 2006. The raw numbers are even more telling and reflect the consequence to the average California resident.
We've written about common carrier liability as a result of the litigation our office is involved in regarding Jet Blue. Recently there was another episode where a common carrier, this time a passenger bus driving on a California Highway, crashed into the rear end of a slow moving maintenance truck on a freeway.
Life can be unpredictable and there are risks we assume in our daily lives. When we place our safety in the hands of a professional driver we do it with the understanding they have the training and professionalism to get the job done right. Airplane companies are paid to provide highly skilled trained pilots who make themselves abundantly aware of the equipment they are flying and thoroughly understand other aspects like weather and how to arrive safely at their destination. Likewise, bus companies must be aware of traffic patterns, road quality and any construction where they might encounter road construction.
In this most recent crash there were 12 confirmed fatalities and another 31 were injured, some severely. The bus was returning to the Los Angeles area from a casino in Palm Springs when the accident occurred in the early hours of the morning. There was no indication the bus made any effort to stop and early speculation suggests the driver of the bus, who was also the owner of the bus, may have fallen asleep. The driver of the maintenance truck was not injured. Investigators will also look at the relationship with the casino along with maintenance issues on the bus and what that driver did in the hours leading up to the crash to see whether fatigue or some other factor might have contributed to the crash.
A tragic crash can happen to anyone. Negligent drivers are on our roads and they aren't paying attention. Some fall asleep at the wheel and there are others who are texting or driving under the influence. Any of these negligent actions can cause a fatal crash in an instant. Families affected by these accidents have specific legal rights. We are skilled in personal injury cases and uncover what happened to cause the accident and we have investigators who help prove who is at fault. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, funeral expenses, loss of companionship, pain and suffering and other damages.

The reality is we all know better and continue to do it anyway. The use of social media along with texting while driving continues to rise. It appears that nothing short of serious injury or death will slow down the use of these applications.
