Trick-or-Treating With the Kids…
DON’T encourage kids, tweens, and teens to go trick-or-treating without adult knowledge and/or supervision, especially in strange neighborhoods. Never allow a child to eat any candy until it can be visually inspected by an adult.
DO accompany young children who are trick-or-treating. Pre-planning a route and designated meeting spot in case someone gets separated from the group is a great idea. Reinforce that kids know to cross at street corners and to make sure they have eye contact with any drivers before crossing a street.
DON’T wear costumes that restrict vision, mobility, or breathing. Avoid costumes that decrease the wearers visibility to others.
DO wear bright, reflective clothing if possible, stick to the sidewalk, and head home when it starts getting dark to help prevent a pedestrian accident.
Attending a Halloween Celebration
DON’T get behind the wheel on Halloween after taking drugs or drinking alcohol. Traffic fatalities surge on Halloween due to drinking and driving. Pre-arrange your transportation plan if you plan on consuming any adult beverages and avoid becoming a statistic.
Visiting a Pumpkin Patch, Orchard, or Corn Maze
DON’T let kids run off on their own at pumpkin patches, orchards, corn mazes, or other Halloween events. It makes them more susceptible to injury and stranger danger.
DO keep a watchful eye out for potential trip hazards or stacked items that may easily tip over. Frightened children and adults alike are more likely to suffer a slip and fall accident or tipping over an awkward display in an unfamiliar environment; especially when night falls.
DON’T participate in any activity that have the potential of being a breeding ground for germs or viruses. Avoid bobbing for apples or eating out of a collective food bowl.
DO wash your hands or use sanitizer before and after picking apples or touching pumpkins. COVID-19, the flu, and other viruses are still around. Although most are easily transmitted through respiratory droplets, it may still be able to survive for a time on surfaces.
