The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) along with General Motors are recalling certain Silverado and Sierra Pickup trucks due to issues with the braking system. The specific issue are the brake calipers and this is the device that presses the pads against the rotor.
According to NHTSA documents, the bolts used to attach the front and/or rear brake calipers may not have been properly heat treated during the manufacturing phase of production. Without the proper heat treatment the bolts potentially lack the strength and as a result could break under braking loads. General Motors says broken caliper bolts can reduce braking performance and go so far as to interfere with the wheel rotation which will increase the risk of a crash.
General Motors says that over 20,000 Chevrolet and GM trucks are included in this recall and GM will notify owners of affected vehicles. If an owner has an immediate concern they are directed to make contact with their dealer or visit my.gm.com/recalls and type in their VIN. On this website they can see if this brake recall includes their vehicle and check for any additional recalls that may be active on their vehicle.
