The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSA) along with Target Corporation of Minneapolis, Minnesota announced the recall of over 200,000 Pillowfort Weighted Blankets. These blankets were recalled after it was discovered young children could become entrapped by unzipping and entering the banket which could pose the risk of death by asphyxiation. The recalled blanket weights 6 pounds, measure 60 inches by 40 inches and has a removable, waterproof and washable cover and were made in China.
In April 2022 two children from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina became entrapped in the cover of the weighted blanket, and died. The cause of death was asphyxiation. In total Target Corporation has received four reports of issues surrounding these weighted blankets. Target and the CPSA are urging consumers to stop using these blankets immediately and to contact Target for a refund.
Target was the exclusive retailer nationwide and additional recall information can be found at www.target.com. The blankets were sold between December 2018 through September 2022 for $40. Affected consumers may also contact Target directly at 800-440-0680 between the hours of 7am to 10pm CT to receive a prepaid return label to return the blankets or they may return them to any Target store. Target is also contacting all known purchasers directly to arrange a return. The consumer will receive a refund in the form of a credit for use at Target stores.
