General Motors is recalling over 800,000 vehicles in the United States for front seat belts that may fail and suspension problems. The seat belt recall covers over 600,000 2019 through 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks. Chevrolet has also included the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe and GMC Yukon XL, and the 2020 and 2021 Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 in the extensive recall. All vehicles included in the recall have split bench seats. Pickups with bucket seats are not affected.
Documents submitted to the government reveal the seat belt brackets may not have been properly secured to the seat frame in the assembly process. As a result the belts may fail to properly restrain the vehicle occupants in a crash. General Motors and Chevrolet say they aren’t aware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the possible seat belt failure. GM will notify owners starting Feb. 1. At that time owners can contact dealers who will inspect the seat belt brackets and assemble them correctly.
The suspension recall covers the 2012 and 2013 Buick Regal, the 2013 Chevrolet
Malibu, and the 2010 through 2013 Buick Lacrosse midsize cars. On these particular models the rear toe links can rust and eventually fail without notice. A coating on the links can chip away over time, expose the metal and allow the components to rust. The result of that rust is the links can fracture. GM says it has no reports of crashes or injuries. During the recall dealers will replace the toe links when parts are available. Owners will get a notice on Feb. 15 and a second notice when parts are ready around March 15.
