Yielding to pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Graco Corporation is conducting a recall of 1.9 million rear-facing infant seats due to faulty harness buckles. The New York Times recently reported this story which followed announcements by the Graco Corporation in early 2014 regarding similar harness buckles.
The Faulty Harness Buckle
The seats are being recalled because under certain conditions the harness buckles may not release like they’re meant to. This means that when a first responder needs to get a child out of the car seat in an emergency they may not be unable to unbuckle the harness. An incident involving a forward-facing seat (the model later recalled in February in March) led to the death of a 2-year-old girl who was trapped in the seat during a car fire in 2011. Pressure from the NHTSA and concerned consumers Graco has issued a recall and is replacing the defective buckle for free.
