Honda Motor Company of America is recalling more than 300,000 portable generators that have been shown to pose fire and burn injury hazards. According to Consumer Affairs Honda is voluntarily recalling the EB2200i, EU2200i, EU 2200i Companion and EU2200i Camo Portable Generators. In each of these portable generators the inverter assembly may short circuit causing the unit to smoke or catch fire, posing the danger of fire and/or burn injuries.
To date American Honda has received 13 reports of the inverter assembly short-circuiting while in use and this includes 10 reports of a fire. There have not been any reports of injuries or property damage. The portable generators that are the subject of the recall were sold with a red or camouflage cover. The generators being recalled have “Honda” along with the generator model name are printed on the control panel. The serial number is located on the lower corner of one the generator’s side panels.
The generators in question were made in Thailand and sold at authorized Honda Power Equipment Dealers including Home Depot and other home improvement stores nationwide and online from February 2018 through January 2020.
If you have one of these products you’re urged to stop using it and contact a local authorized Honda Power Equipment. Honda will schedule a free repair. There was a similar recall of about 200,000 generators in 2019. Honda is contacting all known purchasers directly.
