On California highways, from the I-5 to the 101, speed has always been a primary factor in motor vehicle crashes. However, a disturbing trend of drivers exceeding 100 mph has prompted the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to implement aggressive new measures. Under a new program, the CHP and the DMV are streamlining the process to ensure that drivers caught at these “super-speeds” face the immediate revocation of their driver’s licenses. After seeing the devastating aftermath of high-speed collisions first hand we support this measure. To understand why the state is taking such a hardline stance, one must look at the physics of a 100-mph crash and the catastrophic damage it inflicts.

The Physics of Destruction – When a vehicle’s speed doubles, its braking distance doesn’t just double – it quadruples. At 100 mph, a vehicle is traveling at approximately 147 feet per second. By the time a driver perceives a hazard and hits the brakes, they will have traveled the length of a football field. At this speed, modern safety features like crumple zones and airbags exceed their physical limits. The kinetic energy involved in a 100-mph impact is so immense that vehicles often disintegrate upon impact, leaving occupants with little to no protection.

Catastrophic Injuries and Fatalities – In a standard highway collision at 65 mph, survival is possible. At 100 mph, the likelihood of a fatality increases exponentially. Those who do survive often face life-altering injuries such as traumatic brain injuries (TBI), where the sudden deceleration causes the brain to strike the skull with lethal force. Additionally, the sheer G-force of the impact can rupture internal organs and cause massive internal hemorrhaging. Perhaps most devastatingly, the crushing force of the vehicle’s frame often leads to spinal cord damage and permanent paralysis.

Legal Consequences: The CHP’s New Stance – The CHP’s new FAST program (Forwarded Action for Speeding Tickets) reflects a zero-tolerance policy for extreme speeding. By focusing on license revocation within 24 hours of the citation, the state aims to remove dangerous drivers from the road immediately, rather than waiting for lengthy court battles to conclude. A revoked license is a significant blow to one’s livelihood and freedom, but it serves as a necessary deterrent to prevent the loss of innocent lives. Speeding isn’t just a traffic violation; at 100 mph, it’s often a deadly choice.

Never in my life did I think I would recommend an attorney. Somehow God sent this angel of an attorney to assist me in my personal injury lawsuit. I was told by lawyers in Bakersfield that my lawsuit was frivolous because there was money in it.
