In September 2020 a big truck crash on southbound Interstate 5 killed Joel Broussard. After a year and a half investigation the truck driver accused of causing the crash was arrested and appeared in court. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) report obtained from the Broussard family, Harsmiran Singh was charged with vehicular manslaughter, endangering the lives of the other ten victims and gross negligence in connection to the I-5 crash near Florin Road.
The investigative report compiled by the CHP said as the semi was approaching slower traffic it failed to slow down and that failure caused a chain reaction of crashes. A total of 11 vehicles were involved. Broussard was injured and died at the scene. According to the report, Singh was speeding in a construction zone at 64 mph and hauling 74,000 pounds of plywood which added to the impact. The report went on to say that Singh was driving over the maximum mandated hours set by the federal government and beyond the scope of the law. He allegedly falsified his electronic logging device on the day of the crash. Truck driver Harsmiran Singh is expected back in court in early April to answer for these charges.
