In March of this year we wrote about Westmont Living Elder Care facilities in Chico and Roseville who had 2 unfortunate incidents that lead to the eventual death of facility residents. In both cases the residents were left unattended in the sun without supervision or hydration on warm days.
After a careful review of the events at each facility the State moved to revoke the license of Westmont Living. During their investigation of these events they found the Chico resident was “dehydrated and unresponsive” after being placed in the sun. That resident later died from what an autopsy considered “significant conditions” that included “acute pneumonia” in both lungs. Two months later a resident in Roseville “was left in the sun unattended for 3-4 hours in 100+ degree weather and this resulted in extreme heat exposure and caused him to suffer a heat stroke” according to Carole Hermann who is the President of the Foundation Aiding The Elderly in Sacramento.
In the Chico case the initial fine was $500 which was later raised to a total of $10,000 and in the Roseville case the initial fine was $1,000 and that was later raised to $15,000 which is the highest allowed. In the Roseville case the family also filed a Wrongful Death lawsuit against Westmont Living. Westmont operates 13 facilities in California and Oregon. Thankfully it appears the State is moving in what appears to be the appropriate direction and their actions are an effort to prevent further suffering.
