A girl was killed and 5 other people were injured in a 5 car pile-up and northbound 99 due to the driver of a Ford F-250 pickup truck texting and failing to notice traffic had stopped. The resulting crash killed 1 and sent 5 others to the hospital with moderate injuries. The most seriously injured and the girl who was killed were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicles they were riding in.
Traffic had suddenly slowed to 15 mph, the 24 year old driver of the truck was driving at approximately 55 mph and failed to notice the change and he rear ended an Acura Integra. That collision caused him to strike a 2008 Honda in front of the Acura. The secondary collision launched the Ford Truck into the air, it rolled over on its roof after ejecting the driver. The Ford and the Acura came to rest in the lane of traffic moving in the other direction and 2 cars were unable to avoid the crash.
Drugs and alcohol were not suspected to be a factor in this crash, but the cause is clear. Driving distracted or allowing someone to drive distracted is becoming more of a problem every day.
