The California Highway Patrol’s East Sacramento Office is currently accepting applications for their free two-hour Smart Start driving class. Dates currently available include April 30, May 14 and May 28 and classes are scheduled to run between 6:30 and 8:30 pm in the CHP office at 11335 Trade Center Drive.
These classes are specifically designed for those between the ages of 15 and 19 along with their parents or guardians. The class is taught by CHP field officers and cover collision trends, collision avoidance techniques along with distracted driving laws and alcohol related driving laws. Since field officers are teaching the course all participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the officers and interact with the officers.
Of particular interest is the time the officers spend on distracted driving laws and the restrictions placed on first time drivers. As some seasoned drivers are aware, distracted driving has to do with more than just cell phones. Things like eating, drinking non-alcoholic beverages, on board navigation systems and anything that deflects attention from driving are included. To sign up for one of the courses please contact the area office at 916-464-1450 or e-mail officer Tommy Riggin at triggin@chp.ca.gov
