For many years Honda was the biggest customer of a company destined to be involved in what would become one of the largest corporate bankruptcies in United States history. Plaintiff’s attorneys have released an internal Honda e-mail from a company engineer that seems to show he knew about the Air Bag problems and was afraid to speak up. Honda says the e-mail was taken out of context by the same Plaintiff’s lawyers.
Honda later released an affidavit from the same engineer saying he had incorrectly concluded that an explosion in 1999 was tied to the inflators. The affidavit stated in 1999 the engineer incorrectly tied the explosion to the inflators. Later Honda learned it was in fact the inflators that caused the recall. Those inflators are today still causing problems, injuring people and taking lives. Honda worked to tie the concealed inflator problems to Takata employees and establish fraud on the part of the air bag manufacturer with the goal to demonstrate Honda was a victim and not an actual participant.
Plaintiff’s attorneys say Honda and at least 4 other companies knew the inflators were defective and dangerous and used them for the simple reason they were inexpensive and available. Many of these same attorneys are suing Honda and want the unidentified Japanese Engineer to testify. In the 2013 e-mail the engineer wrote to a colleague that he is a “witness in the dark” who knows the truth about the Takata inflators.
