The roadways in Sacramento are facing a critical public health challenge as traffic-related deaths remain at alarming levels. While our region has experienced statistical fluctuations, the danger posed by vehicles now rivals or exceeds intentional violence. In 2025, Sacramento reported 40 traffic-related deaths within city limits, nearly matching the 38 homicides recorded during the same period. In the broader viewpoint the situation in Sacramento County is even more dire. The county saw over 130 lives lost on local roads in 2025 and this trajectory continued with 7 deaths in the first two weeks of 2026.
These statistics are especially troubling for all vulnerable road users, as pedestrians now account for more than half of all city traffic fatalities. This surge persists despite a statewide trend that saw California’s traffic deaths decrease by 11% from 4,539 in 2022 to 4,061 in 2023. Urban hubs like Sacramento struggle because a small fraction of streets, often in underserved neighborhoods, account for the vast majority of fatal crashes. More on that in our next blog.
In response to these grim statistics, the Sacramento City Council adopted an updated Vision Zero Action Plan in September 2025. This “Safe System” approach aims to eliminate fatalities by engineering streets that anticipate human error, such as establishing 20 mph “Business Activity Districts” and installing red-light cameras. However, advocates note that infrastructure projects often lag behind the urgent need for safety.
Several factors drive these fatalities. Speeding along with distracted driving remain as the primary killers, particularly on wide boulevards and high-speed corridors like U.S. 99. Distracted driving and impairment – contribute to roughly 34% of local fatal crashes and these factors continue to plague our region. Furthermore, the increasing popularity of larger SUVs means collisions are more likely to be lethal for the 21% of victims who are cyclists or pedestrians.
The consequences of causing a fatal accident in California are life-altering for everyone involved. Drivers found negligent or reckless face severe criminal charges, including vehicular manslaughter or “Watson Murder,” which carry prison sentences of two to ten years. Civil liability is equally devastating; families of victims often pursue wrongful death lawsuits resulting in multi-million-dollar judgments along with the loss of driving privileges and permanent job loss.
