In 2026, the City of Sacramento is aggressively targeting specific “High-Injury Network” (HIN) corridors and intersections that account for a disproportionate number of severe accidents. As part of the Vision Zero Action Plan Update (2025–2026), the city is prioritizing infrastructure investments in areas where up to 70% of fatal crashes occur on just a fraction of the street network.
Top Priority Corridors for 2026. The city is currently in the design or construction phase for safety improvements along several major corridors. If your neighborhood is near these streets, you can expect to see “road diets” (lane reductions), protected bike lanes, and enhanced pedestrian crossings:
• Marysville Boulevard: Currently a top priority. In February 2026, the City Council authorized the “Quick Build Phase 1” project between Los Robles Boulevard and Harris Avenue to install high-visibility crosswalks and protected bike lanes.
• Broadway: Major safety improvements are in design, with construction estimated to begin later in 2026. This includes lane reductions and signal modifications to provide protected left turns.
• Stockton Boulevard: Preliminary design is underway as part of the Stockton STEP project to enhance transit and pedestrian safety.
• Arden Way & Auburn Boulevard: Currently under study in the “Arden-Auburn Mobility Plan” to reimagine these sections for better walking and biking safety.
• Fruitridge Road: A joint City-County safety and mobility plan is active for the stretch between Riverside Boulevard and Stockton Boulevard.
Prioritized Intersections. As of early 2026, city staffers have identified 612 specific intersections across Sacramento that require urgent safety improvements. Recent council actions and the “Streets for People” plan have prioritized the following:
• Marysville Blvd & North Avenue: Identified as a high-injury intersection receiving upgrades to controlled crossings.
• Rio Linda Blvd & South Avenue: Recently added as a high-priority intersection for safety enhancements.
• 12th Street: Lane reductions have been completed as part of the top-priority corridor safety push.
• Central City (Downtown Grid): Slated to become a “Business Activity District” with a new 20 mph speed limit to protect pedestrians.
